Dr Ison became involved in influenza during his fellowship at the University of Virginia in 2001 and much of his research career has been devoted to developing new approaches to the prevention and treatment of influenza in the hospitalized and immunocompromised adult.  In addition to significant involvement in the development of a number of approved and currently investigational antivirals, Dr Ison has also conducted epidemiology studies to define the contemporary presentation, clinical course and outcomes of hospitalized adults with a range of respiratory viruses, including influenza, RSV and parainfluenza virus.  Michael is an active contributor to the IDSA and WHO influenza treatment guidelines. 

Michael’s involvement with ISIRV is as the Chair of the Options IX for the Control of Influenza Meeting in Chicago in 2016 and he is the current co-Chair of the ISIRV Antiviral Group.
