Emanuele Montomoli

Professor of Hygiene and Head of the Molecular Epidemiology Research Division, Department of Molecular and Developmental Medicine, University of Siena, Italy                                                                                 

Emanuele Montomoli (Siena, 1968) graduated in 1997 at University of Siena discussing a thesis entitled "Optimisation of the use of MDCK cell cultures (Madin Darby canine kidney) for the epidemiological control of influenza". In 1998 he enrolled in the Biochemistry and Enzymology Specialisation School at University of Siena, and graduated in 2002 discussing a thesis on "Purification of hemoagglutinin of the type B influenza virus through isoelectric focalisation".In 1994 he was awarded a position of technical assistant at the Hygiene Institute. In October 2002 he was appointed as an Associate Professor for the scientific sector MED/42 (General and Applied Hygiene) by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Siena.In 2008 he founded VisMederi srl, a private enterprise involved in management and serology for clinical trials and focussed studies with human viruses for pharmaceutical companies, where he currently acts as Chief Scientific Officer.In 2011 and 2012 he directed the first two editions of the "Summer School of Influenza" co-organised by the University of Siena and isirv.During his studies Prof. Montomoli conducted chemical, chemical-physical and chemical-biological research on various foodstuffs, water samples, fertilisers and heavy metals with UV Visible IR Spectrophotometry, Gaschromotography, HPLC, Electrophoresis and Atomic Absorption. At the Institute of Hygiene of the University of Siena he conducts epidemiological and microbiological research, particularly during the influenza season when he is in charge of the epidemiological and virological surveillance of the respiratory viruses circulating in Italy. Since 1994, he has carried out seroepidemiological research in order to evaluate the immune state of the Italian population toward influenza viruses. He currently co-ordinates and personally conducts epidemiological and seroepidemiological studies for monitoring the various infective diseases preventable with vaccination (tetanus, diphtheria, hepatitis B, etc.). He is the author of more than 50 papers, as well as numerous abstracts and letters, published in Italian and international scientific journals, and he has given numerous talks.
