Mark Miller

Mark Miller, MD is currently Associate Director for Research and the founding  Director of the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies for the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research focus has been on vaccine discovery/development and health outcomes evaluation through the integration of epidemiologic, biomedical and sociobehavioral/economic data with a particular emphasis on computational biology/modeling with special emphasis on vaccine preventable diseases. As a Medical Officer with the Children's Vaccine Initiative, his analyses highlighted the utility of underutilized vaccines through national level assessments of their potential use, leading to investments and the creation of the Children’s Vaccine Program at PATH and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). 

Dr Miller is the PI of several multi-national studies including the Malnutrition and Enteric Disease Study (MAL-ED) and the Multinational Influenza Seasonal Mortality Study (MISMS) and has received over $55 million of private and government research grants based at the NIH.  His work has led to further development of the Vi-conjugate vaccine against typhoid and novel influenza vaccine candidates. Most recently, he has worked on the development of Z-Mapp therapeutic agent against Ebola viral disease in Sierra Leone.    He has has won numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, from the US Public Health Service and the CDC.
