Jackie Katz

Earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Biochemistry and her Doctoral degree in Microbiology from the University of Melbourne, Australia. She did her Postdoctoral training in Influenza virology and was later an Assistant Member in the Department of Virology and Molecular Biology at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.

Dr Katz joined the Centers for Disease Control in 1992 as the Chief of the Immunology and Viral Pathogenesis Section, Influenza Branch, Division of Rickettsial Diseases. From 2006 until 2014, Dr Katz was the Chief of the Immunology and Pathogenesis Branch, Influenza Division. In 2015 she became the Deputy Director Influenza Division (Acting) and the Director, World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Surveillance, Epidemiology and Control of Influenza, Influenza Division.

She has Adjunct appointments in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Pathology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia and is an adjunct member of the Graduate Faculty in the Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis Program. She is an Associate Editor for the International Society for Influenza and Other Respiratory Virus Diseases.

She is recognized internationally for her studies on immunity to and pathogenesis and transmission of seasonal and pandemic influenza viruses, including studies at the animal-human interface to understand the extent of and risk factors for human infection with novel influenza viruses of animal origin. Dr Katz's research is documented in over 270 research articles, reviews and book chapters.
